Role
Two-Person Project

Year
Fall 2023

This group exploration in UX design created a functioning app called StudyScout which aims to help students locate a place to study on campus quickly to reduce the stress and time of finding an available study space. The project focused on layout on a mobile device, basic tenets of user experience, and motion design, and utilized micro and macro animations. The result was a successful integration of data, logic, and visual representation using Figma software.

The Task

Design a digital experience from one of the following topics:

  • Improve a food delivery app experience

  • Improving a dining experience

  • Design a better search experience

  • Level up a watching and streaming experience (such as Youtube, twitch.tv)

  • Improve a social communication experience

  • Improve a wayfinding system

The Problem

From research, we created this problem statement: As a busy college student, I need an app to help me locate places to study that cater to my needs.

The main purpose of the app, StudyScout, is to help students easily find and navigate to study spots within their campus that suit all their preferences. Students can select a variety of preferences, and change them as needed, to create a repertoire of spots that they can always refer back to. StudyScout will help eliminate the added stress that students everywhere face when trying to find a place to start their work.

Full Presentation

In this group project, we did sketching, site mapping, user personas, and journey maps, user research, a style guide including logo design and typography, user research, a lo-fi prototype, and a hi-fi prototype.

Activities Performed

Ideation/Process

First, we created a user persona and user journey map.

We then created several sketches of our potential app.

After conducting several interviews, surveys, and user tests, we created a paper prototype.

Results

The final result of this UX design exploration was StudyScout, a fully functional prototype that effectively streamlines the process of finding study spaces on campus. By integrating user preferences, motion design, and intuitive navigation, the app provides a seamless experience that reduces the frustration of searching for an available study spot. Using Figma, the project successfully combined data, logic, and visual representation to create an engaging and user-friendly interface. Through micro and macro animations, StudyScout enhances the user journey, making it both efficient and visually dynamic. Ultimately, the project demonstrated a thoughtful application of UX principles, prioritizing student needs and minimizing decision fatigue in their academic routines.
