GRAPHIC AND ANALOG DESIGN

Cultural Treasure: The Beatles

In this triptych, I wanted to highlight this timeless band’s unique qualities of playfulness and positivity. As a child, my mom and I would sing their famous song “Hello, Goodbye” together as a call-response duet. The Beatles, and specifically this song, is familiar and nostalgic to me. I chose the lyrics “You say goodbye, and I say hello” as the main focal point. The lyrics are reflected to showcase the duality and interconnectedness of the song to mimic the call-and-response. This project tied the cultural legacy of the Beatles' music with my own fond memories of enjoying their music.

Noir Knights

Project Type
Typography and Poster Design

Medium
Adobe Illustrator and Procreate

Year
Fall 2022

This was a hypothetical movie poster called Noir Knights. The typeface, which I developed in Procreate, is my own original design, which I then used to create a movie poster that reflects the font’s aesthetic. I wanted to create a movie poster that also captured the mood inspired by noir films. The simplicity of the poster was also heavily influenced by the style of graphic designer Chungkong’s movie posters and how minimalistic yet beautiful they are.

Largest Fish in the Ocean

Project Type
Scientific Illustration

Medium
Adobe Illustrator and Procreate

Year
Fall 2022

This poster highlights the largest fish in the ocean. The assignment was open-ended and could be focused on any aspect related to the ocean. Since I have a passion for marine life, I was inspired by realistic scientific illustrations that show the details and scale of different animals. Procreate was the ideal tool to digitally recreate traditional watercolor or gouache illustrations. Each animal is drawn to scale and interpreted from photographs. Once finished in Procreate, I composed the final layout and text in Adobe Illustrator.

Potato Peeler

Project Type
Product Design

Medium
Plastic Resin

Year
Fall 2023

Tasked with designing a distinctive and efficient potato peeler, I started the process with market research, customer needs assessments, and initial hand sketches. The concepts advanced using clay iterations followed by a refined foam model, and a final design in plastic resin with a metal blade. With each stage, the design evolved into a unique product. My inspiration was to depart from a traditional rigid tool and to infuse a more organic, ergonomic, and aesthetic form while remaining functional. The end result reflects my interest in exploring a new process and medium in three dimensions.

Wooden Spoon

Project Type
3D Wood Piece

Medium
Wood

Year
Fall 2021

This 3D assignment focused on creating a unique and functional spoon, which was hand-cut and sanded from a 9” x 3” x 2” wood block. Starting with concept sketches, we developed full-size drawings to transfer to blocks of wood for fabrication. I chose to make an asymmetrical and geometric shape to create a sense of balance.

Chiang Kai Shek Monument

Project Type
3D Model

Medium
Foam core, Wire, Resin

Year
Fall 2021

The design prompt of this 3D project was to create a hypothetical monument that could be installed in a real-life location. I crafted a foam core model of two wire fish located at the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial in Taiwan. Fish are of important cultural significance in Taiwan; I have fond memories of coming to this memorial as a child and feeding the koi fish with my family. This sentimental project pays homage to the grandeur of the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial while encapsulating the warmth and nostalgia of family visits.

Explore the Unknown

Project Type
Data Visualization

Medium
Colored Pencil

Year
Winter 2022

This assignment was to show data observed and collected over a period of time. Over the course of a few weeks, we choose a small task that could be completed in about five minutes every day, and then visually show our data collected from those days. I chose playing Wordle as my task, as it is one of my favorite online games. Wordle only allows you to play one game every 24 hours. Each individual square represents a letter, and each larger 5x6 rectangle represents one game. This piece taught me the importance of time management and helped me discover my interest in visual data.

Succulation

Project Type
Product Poster

Medium
Micron Pen, Marker, Colored Pencil

Year
Winter 2022

This is a product design explanation where I learned to help bridge the gap between conceptual ideas and tangible, real-world products clearly and effectively. It is a combination of an organic object (succulent plant) and an inorganic object (water bottle) blended into one. I created a decorative vase and demonstrated how it could be used. I also included a human hand to show scale as well as an orthographic drawing and zoomed-in view to capture the details.

Stool Exploration

Project Type

Medium

Year
Winter 2022

For this assignment, we interviewed classmates and picked out important themes from their lives to represent through photography. I decided to use a stool as the main prop because while it is such a mundane classroom object, I thought it would be interesting to see how to interact with it differently. The image on the top left represents balance. The top right image represents self-expression as shown with a playful pose, while the image on the bottom left represents change and adjustment which can be seen by the model reaching for another stool (something new). The bottom right represents exploration. This assignment was challenging, but fun and unique to make.

This photograph captures the calm and serenity of the Hawaiian waters and the balance between the ocean, landscape, and sky. The horizon line is purposefully centered to create symmetry. Only when noticing the scale of the people does the grandeur of the sky and earth become apparent.

Year
Fall 2021

For this charcoal still-life, I started with thumbnail sketches of different sections of the drapes so that we could plot out our final layout. This project allowed me to practice observation skills and explore the nuances of light and shadow. The artwork captures the interplay between light and fabric, showcasing the beauty in everyday objects.

Seeing Double

Project Type
Self Portrait

Medium
Acrylic Paint, Linotype Print

Year
Fall 2021

For this self-portrait piece, I posturized a selfie in Adobe Photoshop and created two images. The image on the left is a monochromatic painting, while the image on the right is a linotype print. This two-dimensional exploration allowed me to experiment with the powerful tools of Photoshop.

Sleeping In College

Project Type
Infographic

Medium
Adobe Illustrator and Procreate

Year
Fall 2022

This digital infographic describes the sleep habits of college students. The challenge was to show several statistics and facts in a compact space while creating hierarchies to make it visually clear, concise, and appealing. The background and smaller details were drawn in Procreate, and the layout and text were finished in Adobe Illustrator.

Symmetry Square

Project Type
2D Exploration

Medium
Paper

Year
Fall 2021

This piece is based on the Notan paper-cutting art. This was one of my favorite pieces to develop because it was a technique and approach that was new to me. Starting with a square of black paper, we cut out patterns that were reflected over each side. The theme of my square was about the elements earth, water, fire, and air. The challenge was to compose four distinct patterns that would merge together as one unified and balanced composition.

Emotion Map

Project Type
Visual Data Collection

Medium
Oil Pastel

Year
Winter 2022

This piece is another exploration of visualizing data, inspired by artist Giorgia Lupi. Each color represents a different emotion or state of being. A self-imposed constraint was to start on the left side of the paper every time and move to the right side so that it represented a timeline of my day. This helped me notice patterns of repeating feelings. This large mosaic piece is composed of several smaller works. Many of the pieces repeat, which shows that sometimes life can feel like a timeless loop. The goal of this project was to treat it as art therapy and free my mind. The physical action of translating my emotions through my hands to create art was therapeutic, especially with the smooth textures of oil pastels.

Finding Time

Project Type
Risograph Poster

Medium
Adobe Illustrator and Risograph

Year
Winter 2022

This poster is about my New Year’s resolution of trying new experiences outside of my comfort zone. The simplicity of the background represents the ambiguity of the future, and the balloon is a strong representation of random exploration. The balloon in the “O” of “unknown” helps guide the eye upwards. It was challenging to lay out such few elements in a visually appealing way, but this constraint pushed me to explore creative solutions and discover the beauty of simplicity in design.
